It may be easy to throw a load of mixed laundry into the machine, but if you don’t want everything to turn an odd shade of pink or grey, it’s best to learn how to separate laundry. If you only have a small amount from one group, then don’t be tempted to put it in with another. Save it for a full load. The truth is that sorting laundry is easy and doesn’t take much extra time to do. In fact, sorting your clothes before you head to the laundry can actually save you time in the long run. In this article we would like to give you a few simple tips for sorting laundry…

Sort by Color

Sorting by color is the classic laundry tip. Nobody wants to end up with a full set of pink socks because a red t-shirt wasn’t sorted out. Here’s how you should be sorting by color…

  • Whites – White undershirts, white underwear, white socks,  and white everything.
  • Darks – Blacks, grays, navy blues, dark purples, reds, and other dark clothing.
  • Lights – Lavenders, pinks, light blues, light greens, yellows, and other pastels.

Sort by Weight and Fabric

You may have never thought of it, but sorting your laundry by weight can be helpful when it comes time to dry a load. Wash heavier items, like towels, separately from lighter-weight clothes to prevent abrasion and damage to finer fabrics. For the same reason, separate clothing with zippers and buttons from knits and lingerie. If an item sheds lint, wash it separately from microfiber, corduroy or other fabrics that attract lint. Another reason to separate laundry by fabric type is that heavier items take longer to dry than lighter ones. By drying them together, the lighter items are over-dried, which stresses the fibers, and heavier items are often left damp.

Sort by Stains

Once you have sorted your laundry by color and weight, you will want to pick out any garments that need extra help with stains. Very dirty or stained laundry should be washed separately on a longer, heavy-duty cycle. This provides the agitation necessary to get rid of heavy dirt.

Don’t Overload The Washer or Dryer

Be sure not to overload your washer or your dryer so all your garments have enough room to tumble. I hope this article has helped you with the sorting of your laundry. You will get a cleaner clean and your clothes will last longer.
