As a college student, it can be a challenging task to do your own laundry for the first time. Many students find it easier to go to the laundromat waiting in line at the dorm. The following is guide to help laundry newbies on how to wash and dry their clothing correctly…
Sorting Your Laundry
You can separate your laundry multiple ways, but you can basically get away with four loads: whites/lights, darks, delicates, and towels/jeans/bedding. There is some overlap. For example, you could wash a gray shirt with either the lights or darks or you could throw your bedding in with a small load of lights or darks (depending on the size and color of your sheets). Just never toss a new dark red or purple shirt in with the whites. I don’t think we need to tell you the results. In fact, you may want to wash it separately once or twice to make sure it won’t bleed. Sorting also needs to be done based on fabric and washing instructions. Reading the label carefully is vital. All hand-wash, wash separately only should be kept in separate piles and not taken to the laundry for a machine wash.
Simple Steps to Follow
Once the sorting is done, your child needs to ensure that they check the clothes they want to wash. Check the pockets. for pens, money credit cards. Be sure and unfurl and turn socks right side out. Unbutton all the shirts, zipper the zippers, and close the hooks. If you have special embellishments on your clothes turn them inside out.
Stains and Spills
Do not ignore any stains on your clothing. It is best to pretreat the stain before you put in the dirty wash hamper. Treating stains as soon as they happen increases the probability of the stain being removed from the clothing after they are washed. If clothing is taken to a laundry it is wise to point out the stain to the laundry staff when you drop off the dirty clothing.
Water Temperature and Laundry Cycles
On the washer, there are proper settings to wash and dry clothes and it is one of the most crucial things to keep in mind while washing clothes. Using the proper water temperature and the perfect amount of detergent is as important as knowing the cycles. Stuffing the machines is a common mistake of the first time laundry student. This will not wash or dry the clothes properly and can even cause problems with the washer and dryer.
Build a Laundry Kit
Most students living for the first time by themselves will wait until the last possible moment to do their laundry. So ahead time get a laundry basket and tuck the following items inside…
- Laundry detergent
- Fabric softener sheets
- A change purse filled with quarters for the washing machine
Fold Your Laundry Immediately
Unless you want to look like you rolled out of bed 24/7, put away your clothes as soon as you’re done doing the laundry. Keeping them in a big heap may be convenient, but it’s also the easiest way to make sure each and every piece of clothing you have is wrinkled beyond repair. As the clothing is gotten out of the dryer fold it and put it in your laundry basket.
