Everyone has a little different view on how often you should wash your sheets, towels, linens, and such. It is an important thing to know because we don’t want our household items to become unsanitary or make our family sick. The following are some rule of thumb tips on how often to wash certain household items…

How Often Should I Wash My Bed Sheets?

Bed sheets should be washed at least one time per week.

People sweat a lot as they sleep. The average person sweats about 25ml of sweat per hour and that all ends up in our sheets. We also shed skin. Yep, we shed. 🙁 This shedded skin along with a warm environment, quickly becomes a paradise for dust mites. YIKES!

How Often Should I Wash My Shower Curtain?

Shower curtains should be washed at least one time per month.

Shower curtains are wet or damp most of the day and your bathroom’s hot and humid environment keeps them damp for extended periods which helps them become a breeding ground for mold, mildew, and germs. Read your curtain label before washing.

How Often Should I Wash My Kitchen Towels and Wash Clothes?

Kitchen towels and wash clothes should be washed everyday or changed out everyday until they can all can be washed.

We cook things to get rid of bacteria but our towels come into contact with a bunch of it before that food is cooked. Wipe a knife, pot, or pan with an infected towel and now they are infected also. It can happen quick! It’s best to have separate towels for preparing food and drying hands but all of them used in the kitchen need to be washed daily.

How Often Should I Wash My Duvet?

Duvets should be washed every 3 months.

Duvets are at the bottoms of our beds so they don’t get the amount of sweat or skin on them that our sheets do. But they must be washed and not forgotten at least every 3 months.

How Often Should I Wash My Bath Mats / Rugs?

Bath mats need to be washed at least once a week.

Bath mats are a lot like shower curtains because they rarely have time to dry out and the hot and humid bathroom environment make them a haven for germs and other baddies! Now add urine droplets and feces particles to the mix and you have a perfect storm of grossness!

How Often Should I Wash My Throw Blankets?

Throw blankets should be washed at least once a season. If you eat near them, they should be washed more often.

Throw blankets will be covered in dust, skin, and mites over time. Read your throw blanket label before washing.

How Often Should I Clean My Pillows?

Pillows should be cleaned every 3 months.

Pillows get a good amount of sweat and saliva on them over time. Washing fiber and down pillows is sometimes easier than washing foam pillows so make sure to check their labels for cleaning instructions.

How Often Should I Wash My Bathroom Towels?

If stored right, bathroom towels should be washed every 3 uses and hand towels should be washed every 2 days.

Bathroom towels are best to to be stored outside of the hot and humid bathroom environment. It’s also best to let them dry outside of the bathroom. Towels basically exfoliate you as you use them, so there is skin on them and they will need to be washed as some point. Sometimes nothing is a better judge than a good old fashion smell test!
