Man with mustard on his shirt

Everybody enjoys nights around the bonfire with the family and a barbecue for dinner or lunch. But when you are chowing down on franks and burgers, mustard can pose a real problem for your clothing. Mustard is one of America’s most popular condiments, and one of the most annoying stains to remove, especially due to the yellow dye of turmeric. In this article, we would like to give you a few tips to get rid of those mustard stains…

Mustard and Vinegar

If you get to a stain as soon as it happens, your chances of removing the stain from washable and non-washable fabrics are better than if you let it set. Dried mustard stains are one of the toughest stains on the planet to remove and there is a very good chance that you will need to soak the item several times for the best results. Lightly dab the area with a generous amount of white distilled vinegar prior to your regular wash cycle. Allow 15 minutes for the vinegar to penetrate the fibers of the clothing before tossing it in with the rest of the laundry. If you have a large area, such a spill, on a tablecloth, then make a paste of baking soda and vinegar and apply it directly to the stain. This paste will break down the proteins of the stain, removing it after a full wash cycle.

Old Family Stain Remover Recipe

There are lots of stain removers on the shelves of your local Grocer but sometimes these new products that assure the cleanest clean and the whitest white are not near as good as grandma’s solution that she used for years. This is one we found from a grandma that brought it from the old country…

  • 1/2 cup of olive oil
  • 1/5 cup of hand soap
  • 1 cup of detergent
  • 1/8 cup of butter
  • Mix all ingredients together and place directly on the stain
  • After applying the mix on the stain, Rinse in cold want and be amazed at the results, then wash your garment with your regular laundry load.

Some Soap and Water

If the mustard stain has dried, lift off any excess mustard with a dull knife or spoon. And then use just a little soap and water.

  • Boil some water and ladle the boiling water onto the mustard stain on the garment
  • Cover the area in liquid laundry detergent
  • Wet a cloth with peroxide and scrub the stain right out
  • Rinse with cold water and then wash the garment as usual

Hope you will remember this helpful tip next time you run int a situation with a mustard stain.
