Just like you, your pet loves sleeping in a clean bed. Dog beds and blankets are often bulky and thick which means getting them clean can be a challenge. When washing larger and heavier dog blankets at a laundromat, it’s important to follow the same procedures you would with your own blankets or laundry loads. The most important thing to remember is to not overfill the washer and dryer. When using the dryer, it is best to do one bed or blanket at a time for a more successful drying process.

How Often Should You Wash Dog Bedding?

Despite what many pet owners may believe, a dog’s blanket and bedding should be washed as frequently as our own. It is a common misconception that you only need to wash the dog’s blankets every once in a while, or only when they are actually looking dirty. Just like us, a dog’s bedding should be washed every couple of weeks.

Remove All Pet Hair

Before putting the bedding into a washing machine, be sure and vacuum properly. Washing without vacuuming will result in clumps of pet hair sticking to the bedding in the machine. After vacuuming, use a lint brush to remove remaining pet hair. Adding a cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle will help get rid of any remaining pet hair.

Natural Detergent And An Extra Rinse Cycle

One of the most important questions to ask yourself when you are cleaning your dog’s bedding is if the detergent that you are using is safe. You want to ensure that whatever product you choose to utilize will not make your dog ill or cause an allergic skin irritation. Unscented detergent is best as dogs have a much stronger sense of smell and can easily be irritated by what we may think is a mild scent. Carefully reading the ingredients for the detergent is important as you’ll want a mild, chemical free detergent. Using an extra rinse cycle will add to the cleanliness of the bedding and the machine.

Use Warm Or Hot Water

It is wise to soak the bedding in warm water with 1/4 cup of baking soda solution for at least 15 minutes before putting it in the washer. Washing in warm or hot water is recommended to get rid of germs and odor. If possible, you should aim to wash your dog bedding at a temperature of 140°F as the heat will aid in the cleaning process. A dryer can potentially kill the vast majority of germs if it gets hot enough. 135°F is the minimum temperature at which a dryer can significantly reduce the number of bacteria and viruses.

Most laundromats have hi-tech commercial machines that use less detergent and will quickly wash larger loads. Follow our tips to reduce pet hair and dirt before washing.
